Current Projects

MBSS Landowner Permissions
Supported Maryland DNR’s Maryland Biological Stream Survey (MBSS) by using ESRI ArcGIS Pro to identify landowners surrounding 500 sample sites per year by:
  • Collecting parcels, streams, survey site points into a geodatabase, performing vector processing to generate the survey reach lines, and using a 150m buffer and multiple basemaps to determine necessary parcels for permission, and then
  • Contacting landowners via mail, email, and phone, assembling responses for each parcel into a geodatabase table, and
  • Providing field packets for DNR field scientists to use, with maps of parcels, road access, and landowner responses, saved in PDF file format with attention to clear cartographic design.
Gaithersburg Streams Pre-restoration BIBI
Supporting City of Gaithersburg's stream restoration initiatives by collecting benthic macroinvertebrate samples from two streams to determine condition prior to restoration.
  • Created a mobile-GIS form to collect GPS data and notes for start and end of each 75-meter reach.
  • Used R to prepare data and calculate Benthic Index of Biotic Integrity (BIBI), and used GIS to present results.
Prince George's County Stream Benthic Invertebrate, Physical Habitat, Geomorphology, and Water Quality Sampling
Supporting Prince George’s County Department of the Environment’s long term MS4 permit goals as a subcontractor to Tetra Tech by collecting stream benthic macroinvertebrate samples, measuring stream channel morphology, physical habitat, and water chemistry for monitoring in support of the county’s MS4 Permit part IV.E.1.b requirements.
Stream Channel Stability Monitoring/Geomorphology
Supported Prince George's County Department of the Environment by conducting geomorphic assessments and data analysis to quantify and compare erosion in streams across the watersheds of Prince George's County, taking physical measures of width, depth, and cross-sectional area, coupled with bank erosion hazard index (BEHI), pebble count and other measures contributing to Rosgen stream channel classifications
  • Sampled streambank soils for bulk density
  • Carried out bulk density laboratory work including drying and weighing samples

Previous Projects

Maryland Wetland Ecological Integrity Assessment
Collected field data to test MDE's new Maryland Wetland Ecological Integrity Assessment for characterizing stream-associated wetland habitats and provided information on their condition
  • Assessed 200 field sites across Maryland's Piedmont (Primarily) and Coastal plain sites, collecting data on vegetation (composition, structure, percent cover, floristic quality assessment), physical site characteristics of the wetland sites and their associated streams including bank stability and soil hydrology, and stressors
  • Prepared site summary reports from each site visited
  • Used information from GIS data layers to help characterize habitat condition
  • Created Excel workbooks to assist with assessment, automated calculation of scoring items, and developed a VBA Macro to import data from USACE Wetland Delineation workbooks
  • Used GIS layers to identify additional survey sites to visit for this project
  • Assisted with final report by using GIS to create map figures, R to create statistical figures, and contribnuting photos from field assessments
  • Provided updated observations for Element Occurrence records of rare/threatened/endangered species at these sites
